I am a student at CCSU pursuing a certification in Elementary Education, which I anticipate receiving in December of 2016.

The book I have chosen is Squanto and the Pilgrims, by Susan McCloskey. It describes the voyage of the Mayflower, the pilgrims' settlement in Plymouth, and the interaction between settlers and Native Americans.
The first lesson will focus on the descriptive vocabulary terms used in the story and will incorporate a Powtoons instructional cartoon, a PowerPoint presenting the assignment, and an evaluation rubric from Rubistar that will evaluate the assignment: in this case they will write a short story (of one minute in length) to demonstrate understanding and effective use of the targeted vocabulary terms. I have also created a short story of my own that students can use as a model.
The second lesson will center around the characters and geography in the story, and will incorporate the use of Fakebook, Smart Notebook, and evaluation rubric. Important characters and relevant geography will be reviewed via a Samrt Notebook "quiz". Students will then partner in teams to discuss how a Fakebook account will be created for a character from the story or a made-up character (like a Pilgrim) who may have participated in the events of the story without being mentioned. Students will be evaluated via a rubric which will assess the content and detail of the created Fakebook account. I have included a sample Fakebook account that students may refer to.
